Parshat Shelah 2012-Cosmic Significance of Names

One of the tricks that psychics and other spooky people use to tell you more about yourself is your name.  Your name describes your essence, about who you are.  Not the physical you, but the spiritual you.  The real you.  The concept of doing this is quite old.  Actually, it goes back to us.

When Moshe sent the spies into Israel to scout the land, he knew their would be problems.  He was quite concerned about his main student Yehoshua.  While he was the most loyal student, he wasn’t the most spiritually powerful.  His name at the time was Hoshea.  Moshe added G-d’s name into his to make him Yehoshua. This offered Yehoshua extra protection on his mission.

What’s the difference?  When G-d’s name is connected to anything, it establishes a cosmic link between the person or object and spirituality.  This is one of the reasons that Jews often have names that include G-d’s name as well: Eliyahu (Elijah), Michael, Eliezer, Yeshaya (Isaiah) etc… In a sense, this small action takes Jews who aren’t even so connected to spirituality and ties them to it inherently.  Non-Jews receive a similar benefit through the Jewish conduit.

Spirituality with almost no effort.  So, if you have a Jewish name, use it with pride.  Don’t have one? Get one!
