I wanted to get this out after Aly Raisman won the gold on Tuesday but I was in Disney. Computer access was limited. I actually saw it happen. The only day I caught the Olympics at all actually so I was very glad to see it. Two golds and a bronze is a fantastic show and a lot of bling for an 18 year old. She and her family should be very proud.
I know I’m not the only rabbi to do this but I also want to commend her on using Hava Nagilah to “honor her heritage.” I’m not quite sure why the NBC broadcaster wasn’t able to say the word Jewish. It wasn’t being used as a verb. He didn’t need to though. Everyone knows the tune so it’s very clear who she is and what she wanted to say.
That is her only excuse for using Hava Nagilah though. Even Shwekey is better than that. We’ll have to help her with her music selection for 2016.
